How Do You Get Broader Shoulders?

|Seb Hodgkinson
QUICK ANSWER

Train your side delts properly. Pressing builds the front of the shoulder, which adds little width, so most men press for years and stay narrow. A few hard sets of lateral raises a week, light, controlled and close to failure, plus a wider back underneath, is what makes shoulders look broad.

Most men who want broader shoulders are already training shoulders. That is the frustrating part. They press, they do shoulder day, and the outline in the mirror barely changes. The reason is not effort or genetics. It is that the usual shoulder work trains the wrong part of the muscle for width. Fix that and the change is quicker than you would expect.

What Actually Makes Shoulders Look Broad?

Mostly the side delts. Your shoulder muscle has three sections: front, side and rear. The side section sits on the outside edge of your shoulder, and it is the part that pushes your outline outward when someone looks at you from the front.

The front delt sits on the front of the joint and adds very little to how wide you look. The rear delt adds thickness from behind and from the side. But the width people notice, the line that makes a t shirt hang from the shoulders, comes from the side delt.

Two other things change how broad your shoulders read. The lats underneath them, which widen the torso below the shoulder so the top looks broader by comparison. And your waist, because a narrow waist makes the same shoulders look wider. That is the whole V taper idea, which we cover in full in how to get a V taper.

Lever Effect on how broad you look Priority
Side delts Most of the visible width First
Lats Width underneath the shoulders Second
A leaner waist Makes the same shoulders look wider First if body fat is high
Front delt pressing Little width, mostly covered already Keep, do not add

Why Does Pressing Not Make Your Shoulders Wider?

Because pressing is mostly front delt work, and the front delt is not where width comes from.

Bench pressing and overhead pressing are good exercises and worth keeping. But both push the arm forward or up in front of the body, and the front of the shoulder does most of that job. So a man who presses hard four times a week has a well trained front delt and an under trained side delt, which is why his shoulders look full from the side and narrow from the front.

The common fix of adding more overhead pressing makes this worse rather than better. You pile more work onto the part that is already getting plenty and still leave the side delt behind. The answer is not more shoulder work. It is different shoulder work.

How Should You Train Your Side Delts?

With lateral raises, done lighter and more carefully than most men do them. The movement is simple: raise your arms out to the sides, leading with the elbows, until they are roughly level with your shoulders.

The side delt is a small muscle and it is easy to bypass. Swing a heavy dumbbell and your traps and momentum do the work. Shrug at the top and the traps take over. Drop the weight quickly and you lose half the stimulus. So the weight comes down, the reps get slow and controlled, and the arms move out rather than up.

Light works

A review of loading recommendations found that muscle growth is similar across a wide span of loads, from roughly 30 percent to more than 80 percent of your one rep maximum, provided sets are taken close to failure.

That is why lighter lateral raises are not a compromise. A light dumbbell taken close to failure with clean technique builds the side delt. A heavy one swung up with your traps builds your traps. Stop each set with about one rep left, at the point where the rep speed slows on its own.

Use the full range on every rep. Start with your arms by your sides, raise to shoulder height, lower slowly under control. Our list of the best side delt exercises covers cable and machine options if dumbbells feel awkward.

Full range wins

A systematic review of range of motion in resistance training concluded that training through a full range of motion generally produces greater muscle development than partial range training.

How Much Shoulder Work Do You Actually Need?

Less than most men think. The working range for any muscle is three to ten direct sets per week, and shoulders sit at the mid to lower end of it because they already pick up a lot from your presses.

So the honest prescription for side delts is a modest number of genuinely hard lateral raise sets each week, split across two sessions rather than saved for one shoulder day. That is enough when each set is close to failure. Adding more on top usually adds fatigue rather than width.

Keep the same exercise for months, log the weight and reps, and add a rep or a small jump in weight whenever you can. On lateral raises the jumps are tiny, which is normal. Progress on a small muscle looks slow on paper and shows up in the mirror.

Does Your Back Make Your Shoulders Look Wider?

Yes, and it is the part men forget. Your lats sit underneath your shoulders and run down the sides of your back. When they are developed, your torso is wide below the shoulder as well as at it, and the whole top half reads broader.

A man with good side delts and no lats can look like a T, wide at the very top and then straight down. Add the lats and the shape becomes a V. That is why vertical pulling, pulldowns and pull ups, belongs in any plan for broader shoulders, not just in a back plan.

The back is a large muscle group and sits at the mid to upper end of the weekly range, so it can take more work than your shoulders. Train it alongside your lateral raises across the same two sessions.

How Much of Shoulder Width Is Genetic?

The bone part is. Your collarbone length sets the skeletal width of your shoulders and no training changes it. Everything sitting on that frame, the side delts and the lats, is trainable, and almost nobody is close to their limit. We cover exactly what is and is not genetic in are broad shoulders genetic.

Why Do Lateral Raises Stop Working?

Usually because the traps take over, the weight creeps up until technique breaks, or the sets are stopped at the first burn rather than near failure. The fix is almost always to go lighter and stricter. If your side delts have stalled despite doing all of this, our breakdown of why your side delts are not growing works through the specific causes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make your shoulders wider by working out?

Yes, through muscle. Your collarbone length is fixed, but the side delts on the outside of your shoulders and the lats underneath them are trainable and add real visible width. Most men are far from their limit, so properly trained lateral raises and vertical pulls make a clear difference.

How long does it take to get broader shoulders?

Months rather than weeks. The side delt is a small muscle, so progress on paper looks slow, but consistent hard lateral raise work shows up in the mirror over a few months. If you are carrying higher body fat, losing some of it makes your shoulders look wider much sooner.

How do shoulders get wider?

By building the side delts, which sit on the outer edge of the shoulder and push your outline outward. Wider lats underneath help too, and a leaner waist makes the same shoulders look broader by contrast. The bone width itself does not change.

Can you get broader shoulders at home?

Yes. Lateral raises need only light dumbbells or a resistance band, and light loads build the side delt well when sets are taken close to failure. Add a pull up bar for your lats and you have everything that matters for shoulder width.

Do you need to overhead press for wide shoulders?

No. Overhead pressing mainly trains the front delt, which adds little to width. It is a good exercise for strength and the front of the shoulder, but lateral raises do far more for how broad your shoulders look.

How many lateral raise sets should you do a week?

A modest number at the mid to lower end of the three to ten weekly set range, split over two sessions. Shoulders already get work from pressing, so a handful of genuinely hard, controlled sets is enough. Quality matters far more than adding extra sets.
