Can You Train the Same Muscle Every Day?

|Seb Hodgkinson
QUICK ANSWER

You can, but for hard training there is no good reason to. Muscle grows from hard weekly sets, not from how many days you train. Daily sessions only work if each one is tiny, which spreads the same weekly sets thinner for no extra growth. Two or three hard sessions per muscle a week works just as well.

Every so often a new trend appears promising faster results from training a muscle every single day. Daily push ups, daily arm work, daily abs. It sounds logical: if training a muscle makes it grow, training it more often should make it grow faster. The research says otherwise, and the reason is worth understanding, because it saves you a lot of wasted time. The short version is that frequency is a way of delivering volume, and once you see it that way, training a muscle every day stops looking clever.

What Happens If You Train the Same Muscle Every Day?

It depends almost entirely on how hard each session is.

If every daily session is a genuinely hard workout, with sets taken close to failure, you will not be recovered by the next day. Your performance drops, the weights you can lift go down, and each session becomes a worse version of the one before. You end up doing lots of training that is not good enough to build much muscle.

If every daily session is easy, a few light sets far from failure, you will recover fine. But easy sets send very little growth signal. The only proven driver of muscle growth is mechanical tension from sets taken close to failure. The pump, the burn and the soreness are not the signal.

So daily training puts you in a trap. Make the sessions hard and you cannot recover between them. Make them easy and they barely count. The only version that works is splitting a normal weekly amount of hard sets into small daily doses, and that, as the research shows, gets you nothing extra.

Does Training a Muscle Every Day Build More Muscle?

No. When the total amount of work is the same, training more often does not build more muscle.

This has been tested directly. Researchers took trained men and gave them the same weekly workload, either spread across three sessions or spread across six.

3 vs 6 days

Twenty seven trained men did the same weekly training volume either three or six times a week for six weeks. Both groups gained similar muscle thickness and strength, with no significant difference between them.

Source: Saric, Lisica, Orlic, Grgic, Krieger, Vuk and Schoenfeld, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2019

Six days a week was twice the number of sessions, twice the time spent getting to the gym, warming up and changing, and it produced the same result as three. A much larger review of the research found the same pattern across many studies.

25 studies

A review of 25 studies found that when weekly training volume was equal, how often a muscle was trained made no significant difference to growth. More frequent training only came out ahead when it also meant more total sets.

Source: Schoenfeld, Grgic and Krieger, Journal of Sports Sciences, 2019

That last line is the key. More frequent training sometimes looks better in studies because the people doing it also did more total work. Frequency on its own is not doing anything. The weekly number of hard sets is. Our guide to how many sets per muscle per week covers that number, which for most men is 3 to 10 direct sets per muscle per week.

Why Does Hard Training Need Recovery Between Sessions?

Because a hard set takes something out of the muscle, and you need it back before the next hard set can be just as good.

Every set taken close to failure leaves the muscle fatigued. That fatigue is why your third set of an exercise is usually a rep or two down on your first. Over a whole session it builds up, and it does not vanish the moment you leave the gym. If you come back and train the same muscle hard before it has recovered, you start the session already down, and every set is weaker than it should be.

That matters because the growth signal comes from the last few hard reps of each set, done with real load. Tired muscle lifts less weight for fewer reps. The set still feels hard, maybe harder, but it delivers less of the tension that actually builds muscle. The extra volume also eats further into your recovery, and more volume than you can recover from does more harm than good.

The useful test is simple. If your performance on a lift is back to where it was last time, the muscle has recovered. If it keeps dropping session after session, you are training it again too soon or too hard.

Approach Sessions per muscle Quality of each set Growth for the time spent
Every day, hard 7 Drops as fatigue builds Poor
Every day, easy 7 Too far from failure Poor
Every day, tiny doses 6 to 7 Fine Same as fewer sessions, more admin
Two to three times a week 2 to 3 High, every set done fresh Best

When Can You Train a Muscle on Back to Back Days?

When the first session was light for that muscle, or when the muscle only did a little indirect work.

Plenty of good programmes put a muscle in on consecutive days without problems. An upper body day followed by a lower body day hits your core and grip on both days, and that is fine because neither session hammers them. A pushing day followed by a pulling day uses your shoulders both times, but in very different ways and mostly as a helper on one of them.

The rule that keeps you out of trouble is about the hard work. If a muscle did several genuinely hard direct sets yesterday, do not give it several more today. If it did a couple of sets, or only worked as a helper in another lift, training it again the next day is usually fine. Your training log will tell you quickly if it is not.

This is why most men who train four or five days a week rotate muscles rather than repeating the same ones. It lets you train often while each muscle still gets its hard sessions spaced out.

What About Light Daily Practice Like Push Ups?

Light, easy practice is a different thing from training, and it can be done daily.

Doing a handful of easy push ups every morning, stretching, or practising a movement with light weight to improve your technique does not take much out of the muscle, because none of it goes anywhere near failure. You will recover from it fine. Just be honest about what it is. It keeps you moving and it can help you learn a lift, but it is not what builds a bigger chest or bigger arms.

If you enjoy a daily habit, keep it light and do your real, hard training two or three times a week per muscle. That way the daily practice never gets in the way of the sessions that actually count. Effort is the bigger lever anyway. Our guide to effective reps explains why the last few reps of a set matter so much more than the total number of sets you do.

What Should You Do Instead of Training Every Day?

Pick a weekly number of hard sets for each muscle and spread it across two or three sessions.

For most men that means training three or four days a week, with each muscle getting its hard work two or three times. Every set is done fresh, every set goes close to failure, and you add a little weight or a rep or two whenever you can. The full answer, including how frequency changes from muscle to muscle and how to fit it into three, four or five training days, is in our guide to how often to train each muscle.

If you have been training a lot and not growing, the problem is rarely too little frequency. It is usually effort, progression, food or sleep. Our breakdown of why you are not building muscle goes through each one. Fix those and you will build more with fewer sessions than you ever did training every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often can I train the same muscles?

For hard training, two or three times a week per muscle works well for most men, with 1.5 to 3 sessions as the useful range. More often than that does not build more muscle when your weekly sets are the same. It only adds more sessions to recover from and more time spent in the gym.

Is it bad to train the same muscle 2 days in a row?

Not if the first day was light for that muscle. If it did several hard sets close to failure, training it hard again the next day usually means weaker sets, because it has not recovered. If it only did a couple of sets or helped in another lift, the next day is generally fine.

Can you train the same muscle twice in a day?

You can, but it offers no real advantage for building muscle. Splitting one session into two shorter ones the same day does not add growth if the total sets are the same. For most men, one well planned session per muscle per training day is simpler and just as effective.

Can you train abs every day?

Your abs follow the same rules as every other muscle. They grow from hard sets close to failure and need recovery between hard sessions. Training them hard two or three times a week works better than light daily crunches. Visible abs also depend far more on low body fat than on extra ab work.

Is it OK to do push ups every day?

Yes, if they are easy and well short of failure, because light practice is easy to recover from. Just know that easy daily push ups do little for chest growth. If you want a bigger chest, do hard sets two or three times a week and keep any daily push ups light.

Is it better to train a muscle daily with fewer sets?

It is not better, just different. A study comparing the same weekly volume over three or six sessions found similar muscle and strength gains. Spreading your sets across every day of the week costs more time and planning for the same result, so most men are better off with fewer, harder sessions.
