Every method of measuring body fat outside a laboratory is an estimate, and some are much rougher estimates than others. That sounds like bad news until you realise what you actually need the number for. You are not trying to establish a scientific truth about your body, you are trying to find out whether the fat is going down. Here is what each method does, how far out it is likely to be, and which one to actually use.
Which Body Fat Measurement Methods Are Worth Using?
There are five you are realistically choosing between. A DEXA scan is a low dose X-ray done at a clinic that separates fat, lean tissue and bone, and it is the most accurate thing most men can get access to. Calipers pinch a fold of skin at set sites and convert the thickness into an estimate.
Bioimpedance scales, the type with metal footplates, pass a small current through you and estimate fat from the electrical resistance. Tape measure formulas use your waist, neck and height to produce a figure. Visual comparison against reference photographs produces no number at all but is surprisingly useful.
All five have a place. The mistake is assuming the expensive ones are always the right answer and the cheap ones are worthless, because for tracking purposes that is close to backwards.
How Accurate Is Each Method Really?
DEXA is the most reliable of the group, but it is not infallible and its results move if the conditions are not standardised.

Why Does Consistency Matter More Than Accuracy?
Because you are measuring a direction of travel, not establishing a fact. Suppose your scale reads three points lower than reality. That is a poor measurement. Now suppose it reads three points low every single time, under the same morning conditions. The error cancels out of every comparison you make, and the change it shows you is real.
This is why swapping methods mid diet is the actual mistake. A caliper reading of fourteen percent followed by a scale reading of eighteen percent a month later tells you nothing at all, because you changed the instrument as well as the body. Pick one and stay with it.
It also means the cheap methods are far more useful than their accuracy suggests. A basic scale used properly every Monday morning beats an expensive scan you take twice a year, at least for the question of whether this week is working.
How Should You Actually Track It?
Keep it simple and repeatable. Weigh yourself daily, first thing, after the bathroom and before eating or drinking, and judge only the weekly average rather than any single reading. Daily fluctuations are water and food, not fat.
Add a waist measurement once a week at the same point on your torso, and take front and side photographs every fortnight in the same spot and the same light. If you own a scale or calipers, use them under those same fixed conditions and log the number, but treat it as one input rather than the verdict.
Then judge the set together. If your weekly average weight is drifting down, your waist is shrinking and your photographs look leaner, you are losing fat and the exact percentage is academic.
