This chocolate mug cake is quick, high in protein, and gives you a proper balance of carbs, fats and protein.
WHY THIS RECIPE IS GREAT
Sometimes you want something sweet without blowing your calories for the day. That’s where this chocolate mug cake fits perfectly. It’s a proper dessert that takes minutes to make, but it also helps you hit your protein target.
The balance is solid too. You’ve got carbs from honey, a bit of healthy fat from nut butter, and a big protein boost from the egg and cocoa. It works as a late-night snack or even a post-workout fix.
INGREDIENTS IN CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
COCOA POWDER
Gives you that rich chocolate flavour without piling on the calories.
DARK CHOCOLATE
Adds more chocolate depth and helps with texture when it melts through the cake.
EGG
The main protein source here and also what holds everything together.
HONEY
Brings natural sweetness and energy from carbs. You can also use maple syrup if that’s what you’ve got.
NUT BUTTER
This is optional, but it adds fats, more flavour, and makes the cake richer.

HOW TO MAKE A CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
- Crack the egg into a large microwave-safe mug and whisk it lightly.
- Add cocoa powder, honey, and peanut butter. Mix until smooth.
- Break the dark chocolate into small pieces and stir half into the mixture, saving the rest to melt on top later.
- Microwave on high for 60–75 seconds. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t overflow.
- Once cooked, top with the remaining chocolate so it melts slightly into the warm cake.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR THE BEST RESULTS
Use a large mug, or the cake will spill over.
Don’t overcook it. The cake keeps cooking after you take it out of the microwave. A slightly soft centre makes it taste even better.
If you want to lower the calories, you can skip the nut butter, but it does add great flavour.
WHAT TO SERVE WITH CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
This is solid on its own, but you can level it up:
- A spoon of Greek yoghurt for more protein
- Melted chocolate on top
- A handful of frozen berries
- Crushed nuts for crunch
